The organic deterioration of the frontal lobes in the process of normal aging has a greater influence on episodic memory than perhaps premature lobes in young children. The neuropsychological implications as in brain maturation, deterioration in the normal aging course, and damage are conveyed. Via the use of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST) as developed by Esta Berg in 1948, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and explicit and implicit memory tests, researchers have performed extensive empirical research on source-amnesiacs and concluded or suggested neuropsychological geneses.ĭaniel Schacter and Endel Tulving have each proposed that memory for facts is differentiated from memory for context. The disorder is particularly episodic, where source or contextual information surrounding facts are severely distorted and/or unable to be recalled. Did you actually remember the event? Or did you attribute emotions to the event and recreate the event in your head and call it a memory? You can never really be sure of where your older memories are coming from most of the time. If you really think hard about from where this made-up memory came, you would have a difficult time really pinpointing where that memory originated. These kinds of memories, memories that aren’t really yours, but seem like your own, are due to source amnesia. So is my memory of an event that happened 15 years ago really this vivid or did I just take the schema I know about birthdays, her house and her dog and just piece them together to form this “false memory?” I remember the way her house looks because I’ve been there a billion times. There are dozens of pictures capturing the event that I see every time I go through our photo albums. ![]() ![]() And my parents and her parents have told me multiple stories about this event throughout the years. The problem with this memory is that I was so young when it happened. I remember playing all the fun birthday games and scrambling to pick up the candy from the ground when the pinata was finally broken open. There was another table full of colorfully-wrapped presents from the other guests. There was a pinata and a table with snacks and cake on it. I remember walking down the stairs to the basement where the party was being held. I remember walking in the front door, birthday present in hand, and her dalmatian jumped up on me like he always did. ![]() In first grade, I went to my best friends birthday party. Even though I feel like I remember my first-grade best friend’s birthday party, or the color of the carpet in my bedroom when I lived in Allentown, any memory that I think I have is probably just a fabrication made from stories that my parents and family friends have told blended with emotions and details that I’ve made up in my own mind. ![]() And as much as I’d like to think I remember every house I’ve ever lived in and every school that I went to or every friend I made, I can’t. I changed elementary schools 3 different times. The first time we moved, I was 4 years old and by the time we moved into the house my parents live in now, I was 8. My dad’s job required my family to move 4 times in 4 years.
